Do the kids know what they are eating?

IMHO, No, not really.

A few days back, we purchased a few sweets in an outlet near a primary school. Yeah, it does happen that we sometimes we want to revive those days when we were still little kids. In fact, we do purchase those sweets very often and we share them among office colleagues lol!

We had this packet shown in the pics, and here what we found among the list of ingredients :

At that moment, we asked ourselves

“What about the kids? Do all of them know that one of the ingredients is Gelatine (Bovine)?”

Note : Hindus do not usually eat bovine-based products, nor porc-based ones, just like they don’t usually eat Big Macs. btw, anyone got an update about Mac Do v.s Iskon?

    Have you ever heard of lightning striking a Hindu who ate beef? Or divine retribution on a Muslim who inadvertently consumed port? I would be more concerned about the children’s health and diabetes prevalence than superstition.

    Who cares about gelatine? Food is Food.
    To hell **** religious limitations on food. Its the 21st century everyone can eat whatever he or she wants
    If don’t like, don’t eat but don’t influence others

    I 200% agree with Yowan.. food is food, the moment the hygiene is correct and well cooked, everyone can eat a big mac for example from mcdonalds… we live in a modern society, and let everyone enjoy their freedom and taste a good big mac if they want even if they are hindus.

    If you believe in fairy tails, then live by them and get restricted in whatever you eat, wear or do….
    There’s nothing wrong with “Gelatine Bovine”, unless proven otherwise by science, it’s a safe product

    Okies Lets be honest here .. how many of us *adults* check the ingredients carefully and then grab sth off the shelf ??? I guess we are par with the kids here :p … why just focussing on the gelatine content here?? how bout the sugar/fat/salt etc content… ??

    I do check. I’m paranoid and do even check what those products are on the internet :s

    There are too many ways to be a potential cancer victim, and if you do think about all this and fear too much, you might develop an illness out of fear :/ and may not eat anything at all or might be restricted to just a small set of food.

    So, I do check contents to get informed, but in the end, I enjoy what I eat even knowing it might be bad

    @jp … i know that feeling :p … but we just a handful individuals doing this and we all aware thats a fact … now thats another thing getting informed about something and then abiding by it is another .. and we all know we do things that we aint meant to be doing and this is not restricted to food only … LOL …

    Kids generally cannot discriminate between good and things until they reach some age.
    I heard that their aversion of snakes, insects etc develops as from the age of 2-3. Their notion of ‘contamination’ (not to pick up things from the ground, drink from someone else’s glass, etc) develops only much later…
    So, it’s the duty of adults to oversee whatever the kids, especially small ones, happen to carry.
    It’s much better that you tell and convince them from very young that sweets and things cause harm to their mouth than to lament later when your grown-up is binging on them with what remains of their teeth…

    Now, what about us, adults? Do we take care of what we administer to ourselves?
    Some examples: cosmetics and other stuff are seemingly harmless, but actually, no…
    What about food itself? We are perfectly aware of the harm of regularly eating our traditional (very fatty / spicy) foods, but still, we are behaving as if being record-holders of diabetes, cholesterol and heart-related diseases was somewhat glamourous… why? Is is a form of slow suicide or what?

    So, now the defuse the tension that some may have inadvertently been induced by some referring to religion, a little joke about “bad” things:

    Four Worms and a Lesson

    A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. Four worms were placed into four separate jars.

    The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.
    The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.
    The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.
    The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.

    At the conclusion of the sermon, the minister reported the following results:

    The first worm in alcohol – Dead.

    The second worm in cigarette smoke – Dead

    The third worm in chocolate syrup – Dead

    The fourth worm in good clean soil – Alive!

    So, the minister asked the congregation:
    “What can you learn from this demonstration?”

    Maxine, who was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said,

    “As long as you drink, smoke, and eat chocolate, you won’t have worms!”

    The service pretty much ended here…

    I don’t undestrand all that fuss about the gelatine (bovin). The ingredient’s list is written at the back of the sweet’s packet, right?

    So, what the hell?!! All they have to do is to take a look at the list!!

    There’s absolutely no fuss out here. I just asked myself how are those kids suppose to know what they are eating is right or not. Some of them don’t even know how to write their names.

    As for your lame argument – that the post is solely about properly reading food labelling -, the blogger trod into murky waters with his note at the end of the post. He went as far as referring to the McDo/Iskon case, hence the religion-food comments.

    I am a happy pork and beef eater, and I will eat them anywhere in Mauritius – as is my constitutional right. Beef steak is my favourite dish and I consume beef at least twice per month. Beef top-side is heavenly and no stupid PETA propaganda will prevent me from enjoying it. However, I will not force anyone else to eat beef or pork, not even tempt them to do so.     I agree with Rohan.

    I always check the ingredients before buying…we live in a society with far too many processed with all sorts of ingredients mixed together. Excessive consumption of this sort is very unhealthy, especially for children as it can cause allergies (this happened to my brother).

    We dont do it simply of some self respect and personally i’ll betray myself if one day ill do that.

    Regarding comment about PETA, i think they are doing a great job in the world and i dont think ur in position to treat them as “Stupid”.
    And i think u lack common sense.

    I do check every time i buy something. Being vegeterian got to be more careful about it… ^^
