If you have not heard about it yet, there’s a new question & answer website (CleverDodo.mu) that’s been recently launched in Mauritius and aims to help people easily find answers they are seeking. Although the concept is not unique as there are more established Q&A websites like Yahoo!Answers, CleverDodo however is more adapted to us Mauritians though as it allows people to communicate in English, French or Creole on the website.

It is the first Mauritian website to be properly designed in Creole and the extent of our mother tongue being used throughout the site is remarkable. There are many places on the web where you can find Creole being spoken but CleverDodo has been built with the language in mind and the buttons as well as any other feedback prompts are displayed in Creole and this gives it that special touch and patriotic feeling.

As more and more people turn to the Internet for information to help them in their everyday life, a site like this can really help in obtaining timely and accurate information on a particular subject. Sometimes it can be hard to search on google.mu for a specific topic relating to Mauritius as it’s a tiny island which has not yet fully used the power of the Internet to facilitate things and you can find yourself going to 10-20 websites before you actually find what you’re looking for (if you’re lucky that is) and many people get frustrated in the process and turn to friends/family who may recommend someone knowledgeable in the area for guidance instead.

Anything that’s going to make our lives more simple will be welcomed and sharing knowledge is always rewarding as well as helping other people in need. To see Mauritius embracing technology and progressing warms the heart, so let’s hope to see more initiative like this.

Welcome back to yashvinblogs.com. Today, we gonna welcome a new guest writer, who calls himself “Vendetta”. The latter mailed me his article a few days back, but I promised to publish it during the weekend. Thanks a lot to him for his article which proves that he is really knows a lot about what we are going to talk. So, here it goes.

Many of you are probably aware of the numerous ads on the billboard, themed “volonter pu morice”. Well is it? Or is it a total blasphemy to the whole belief of being independent and genuinely influence people with remarkable thoughts. Alas, these ads are not only an insult to the idea of being independent but has also several infringements to the copyright act and is a prime example of plagiarism (if i am not wrong).

Voila, i present you the real deal, the battle of Iwo Jima. Being myself a war connoisseur, I could talk for hours about wars and its implications, but I will keep it short for now

A short while after Japanese attacked Pearl harbor in 1941, Americans were so zealously eager to avenge back. They started to conquer island by island in the Pacific, thus beginning the Pacific campaign of World War II. In early 1945, they reached Iwo Jima; Americans had in mind to capture several important assets on the island, one of them was airfields. The battle of Iwo Jima was one of a kind; it was ferocious, and viciously terrifying. Outnumbered, the Japanese lost to the Americans, who marked this event by raising their flag at the top of Mount Suribachi. Ironically, this battle took place during March, same as our (in)dependence. This is what I conclude, on one hand, the battle of Iwo Jima, a battle of heroes who defended their country at the most single threat to their freedom and on the other hand, probably some lazy ass Mauritian Graphic designer ripping others’ work as his own dignity is fading away.

I do not know who did that ads, but if I ever have the chance to talk to that person, this is what I will probably say:

“Your illustrator skills sucks big time, my friend! Your vectors are so representative of your incompetence and your inability to respect any moral or social values. Oh yes! I have Photoshop and Illustrator skills to back my comments.”

One of my dear and most regular readers decided to write an article for us to share his experience with a few Internet Service Providers and also, some useful information about his new internet connectivity, the Wimax Emtel Pro

The ongoing saga of the search for a good ISP

For the past 3 years I have been using the Nomad Wimax 512KBPS subscription which was kind of ok for general use. However, just before the Christmas holidays Nomad advised me by SMS that they would be doing a server upgrade. Under those circumstances you expect to have interruptions of service. There was the usual breaks in the service and I did not bother about it too much. The problem was and still is that, well after the end of year holidays the interruptions continued.

Today my Nomad connection no longer works like it used to. I found that for long periods of time I was not obtaining an IP address from the server. I tried several tests with the rabbit modem such as removing the router and directly connecting it to a PC or a laptop. I found that I would get an IP conflict error several times. Otherwise I would go for hours without getting an IP address from Nomad. When it did connect I would only be able to have a connection about twice a day. Looking at the router status I found that Nomad was implementing a lease time of 2 hours so it meant that my communications would be interrupted automatically. Just imagine the frustration if you are uploading or doing internet banking.

To summarize, I was having extreme difficulty in connecting with Nomad and when I finally had a connection it would be restricted to a maximum of 2 hours. I then decided on two things;

1. Got myself an orange internet-everywhere subscription just to have a connection whenever and
2. Got the services of an IT technician to check out things my end and prove that the problem is indeed with the ISP.

The IT technician did all the usual checks and then went on the phone to the Nomad service with his findings. Magically I would get a connection after they did a reset at the Nomad end and suddenly an IP address would appear. However the same cycle would start all over again. The IT technician was very clear that the problem was at the Nomad server end and that I would probably continue to have the same difficulties.

So the aftermath of this saga is that I have spent extra on an orange internet-everywhere subscription plus the time for an IT technician intervention as well as paying for a Nomad service which was supposed to be a 24hrs one. To be fair Nomad reduced the January monthly bill by 30%.

Anyways, decision time came to go for a new ISP and gradually cut down on these expenses.

Enter Emtel

After looking at MyT and reading about the MT on-site technical service or the lack of it, the positive reviews about Emtel attracted me. I was willing to subscribe to a more expensive service as long as it came up with the goods. I must say that I have been delighted with the service I received from Emtel.

My first contact with the Emtel representative went smoothly and the person was very helpful in dealing with the administrative side. Within two days the on-site survey was done by technicians to determine if there was a good signal at my place and check out the installation requirements. The very next day three technicians completed the whole installation, rooftop antenna, cabling and indoor cabling, router configuration, wi-fi test, testing the connection and finally activation. All done professionally without any delays or problems.

I am one happy Emtel client using their 1Mega Wimax-Pro subscription and my connection is stable. I highly recommend Emtel for an internet subscription. Now I can deal with cancelling the superfluous subscriptions.

Hardware

• An Alvarion ODU (outdoor unit) is on the roof with the antenna, this has all the smart stuff in it for the point-to-point microwave link.
• An Alvarion IDU (indoor unit) is fixed to the wall near the PC, this is just a power injector and as some control LEDs on it.
• An ethernet cable runs from the ODU to the IDU.
• Another ethernet cable runs from the IDU to my router which provides WiFi around the house.
• Netgear Router WGR614v9 (Rs2,875 incl. VAT)
  Purchased separately to enable wifi.

Price

Installation: Rs 1600+vat (Can be some extras if you require PVC pipes for external cabling but that is an option, +-Rs500)

Emtel Wimax Pro (24/7 access, unlimited download/upload):

• 128Kbps = Rs849+vat p/month
• 256Kbps = Rs949+vat p/month
• 512Kbps = Rs1699+vat p/month
• 1MB = Rs5,889+vat p/month
• 2MB= Rs11,999+vat p/month

Bon ça y est, je ne peux plus m’en empêcher, tellement je pète un câble¦ et ceci à chaque reprise, j’ai envi de casser ce poste de radio à coup de batte de baseball, mais bon, mon attachement pour ce poste incrusté dans ma voiture m’en empêche.

Donc je disais, que sur cette chaine de radio privée, qui se veut d’être intelligente, avec de bons reportages sérieux et de débats/recherches les fin d’âpres midi, on entend des bêtises incommensurables dans les réclames (bon je ne compte pas aussi la bêtise d’un vieux reporteur grincheux qui insulte ses auditeurs et dont ses initiaux sont F.S).

Donc trop c’est trop, après avoir entendu cette réclame aujourd’hui, et immédiatement encore zapper de poste de radio en conséquence (mes chers amis de cette radio privée, imaginez vous combien d’audimat vous perdez à chaque fois rien qu’à  cause de cette pub soit disant rentrée d’argent pour vous?), je me lance j’écris cet article pour le blog de mon cher ami Yashvin.

Il n’y a rien de plus con, stupide, abjecte, et irritant comme pub, beurk!

Zéro recherche ici de la part d’une société qui a toujours innové ces réclames dans le temps. Mais la on a touché le bas fond des abysses!

Voici un extrait de quelques secondes :

C’est pas nouveau. A plusieurs reprises, j’ai écrit sur les différentes pubs qui me faisaient “grincer les dents“. Je ne peux m’empecher de faire mention d’une autre pub énervante, celle du lait SNOWY. Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais je n’arrive plus à trouver cette video sur le net. o.O

Hello and welcome to my Adobe Photoshop tutorial, today we are going to create a WebDesign or template or whatever you call. I don’t think this tutorial and creation will be too difficult for you because I’ve put everything in easy to follow steps and tried to explain the best I could.If you have basic knowledge about Photoshop you should be able to easily keep up and let me guide you through this tutorial!

However, before I will post this tutorial I will just tell you something. I have been playing with photoshop for less than 8 months and I have had a real grasp of it. So if you have difficulties starting, I highly suggest following tutorials which can be found on the net. I will give you some sources at the end of this article and of course, the link to my portfolio!

Let’s get our hands dirty!

Many Webmaster these days, are using custom forums script, DDL scripts, wordpress, joomla or any other custom CMS scripts.

Since this is going to be a basic tutorial, I will simply create a basic image hosting page today and if I have time, I will post a vbulletin tutorial before my exams

Tools

You will need:

1. Adobe Photoshop (CS3 or furthur but I personally prefer CS3 because its really easy to use)
2. Internet Access (You should have one if you are reading this =P )
3. Well, some real basic of the tools in photoshop. Don’t worry even if you don’t have basic skills, you will learn today

Step 0: Join the blog’s fan page

Step 1:

Let’s start by creating a layer of 1000 x 1100 and set background as black

Step 2:

Now, we are going to design the navbar. Go you make a new group by going To:
Layer > New > Group > You rename Group 1 to “Navbar” and you click Ok.

After making the group, choose the Rounded Rectangle Tool with a radius of 10 Px

Now make a new layer and draw a Rounded Rectangle with your tool:

Call that layer “NAVBAR_BG”

Now We are going to put the effects on the navbar. So Right click on NAVBAR_BG and select Blending Options.

Now You need to apply the Following Effects (1-4 shown below):
1. Drop Shadow
2. Outer Glow
3. Inner GLow
4. Bevel and emboss
5. Gradient Overlay (default  Black and White)
6. Stroke Colour: #000000.

Don’t worry just follow the following pictures to get the same effects as mine

After following all the above steps, you should have something looking like that:

Next, you take you Line Tool and draw borders to separate texts you write with your Text Tool. Simple
Here is what i got:

Now Let me show you a little Photoshop trick. This can be very useful in web design especially when designing templates:
I will change the colour of the navbar without doing much work

So you click on NAVBAR_BG.
Next, you click Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation

Press Ok. A new little window Will appear and you must Check Colourize.
Now You play with the slides till you get a colour which you like:

Great. Now that you get the colour you like just click OK and see your navbar.

That’s it ladies and gentlemen, you completed your navbar design. =P

In this design I preferred to make my navbar of dark colour to make it match the colour of the whole design

Note: please Group all your navbar files.
Otherwise your PSD design ( Photoshop Design) will be untidy and you will find yourself lost

Step 3:

I know you may have got a hard time on step 2 but don;t worry I’m trying my best to make it easy for the “beginnest” of photoshop xD.

Let’s move on to the Description Panel. I highly suggest you follow this step well because I am going to use the same effects and design for doing other parts.

Go You make a new group Called “Description”

Using Your Rounded Rectangle tool at 5PX, draw a box

Oh Don’t worry, its super ugly this box but now we will add these effects and Make it look good

Ok right click on the shape layer you just made and select blending options
Apply the following Effects:

Good, now take your Text tool and type whatever you want.

Lorem ipsum is the dummy text so i copied and pasted this, but you can type whatever you want eh!

Step 4:

Cool,now that you know how to make the description box, you can make the login box.
So grab your tools and create a smaller box for the login box and apply the same effects as previous step. Then grab your text tool and write what you see in the picture and use again the Rounded rectangle Tool to make the Text Boxes

Simple.

Below is my result:

That’s it let’s now proceed to step 5.

Step 5:

Now,we are going to make another group called “Upload Box”.

Again like step 3, We are going to make a box for the Upload box. So grab your tools again and Do it

You will notice the buttons in the design, to be honest i myself downloaded these buttons on the net and I wonder where lol xD. Don’t worry guys, just make the upload box, you will have a surprise at the end of this article

Step 6:

Nearly finished, lol.

Now create a new group called ” Recently added pics” and Same box as you did for steps 3-5 but size different of course.

Hehehe,now go on google images and find some pics. Copy and paste then to your photoshop design and resize them using CTRL+T or Edit > Free Transform

Now we make the pics align with the box and I will add two little buttons to make it look like a scrolling design.

Step 7:

This is an optional step. I did it just to make it to make my design more beautiful xD

Well, This will involve skills on using the Pen Tool and draw the bars.

So it’s up to you and your imagination.

Step 8:

Whoa, Finally… Add some text on the design and create The Logo. A site without a logo is not really a site imho.

So I decided to make a simple logo for this with my text tool and some effects.

Despite being younger than most of us here, both have already a few videos with loads of special effects. Amazing, I feel so small since I never tried anything like that!

The story

Have you ever heard of Avatar? Have you ever heard of Transformers? What about other Titanic or Jurassic Park? Well, of course you have. These are some of the most famous movies on our planet.

After watching Avatar, everyone was like: “Hmmm. Effets Speciaux Chocs”. But have you ever wondered how these were made? Nearly everyone says that these kinds of things are reserved to pros. They all think that realistic special effects require a lot of money to achieve.

Well my friends, let me tell you our story…

Mine started like 2 years ago when I stumbled over a Japanese anime series called Naruto with which I became addicted like after the 1st episode. Back then I was about 13 years old. It was then that my story began.

Addicted and immature as I was, I wanted to give the feeling that I was also one of them. So I started learning Photoshop and made some amateur pictures of me doing some sort of superpowers. One day I was surfing, goggling on how to improve my Rasengan( a Naruto superpower) when I came across a tutorial on YouTube by teun3sixty depicting how to make a video of a Rasengan using a program called Adobe After Effects. Discovering Adobe After Effects

In other words, it is a video editing program which is used for many movies made till now. And I was like, “Nisa nett!!! Bizin Sey sa!” And that’s when I started learning After Effects. Of course before I managed to create a rasengan I had to start learning after effects from the start. I used “VideoCopilot” tutorials. They are actually excellent and have helped me a lot.

Well at first, some people were like: “Hey n00b net sa ta! Arete perdi to letemps”
So I stopped making videos for a while but still kept improving the other effects I had already created.

Well let’s fast-forward to this year. By the way, I am currently in Form 4 and studying at “College du Saint Esprit” located in Quatres-Bornes. Near the end the second semester, my friend “kind of forced” me to set up a YouTube channel for my videos. So that’s when I’ve started “youtubing”. Frankly I was quite sad at the little amount of views I was getting. So that’s when I had decided to do something cool.

The home-made Green Screen Studio

I first asked my parents’ permission, and then transformed our TV room into a Green Screen Studio. Well using a green screen forms part of a technique called chroma keying.

Below are some pictures of how I installed everything in my TV room:

Well together with the help of Veekshay and Rufaida(my cousin who is in Form 3 at Gaetan Raynal), I managed to make a more lengthy video. Actually the pictures from the diagram are from my video.

So what now?

Amazed at what can be done for under Rs.3000(price of HD webcam + greenscreen) and 1 week of work? Of course my video is not perfect and there is still room for improvement, especially on the acting side (I know I look kind of like a zombie J). By the way the intro was designed by Veekshay and colorized by me.

More about the 13yrs old self-made producer…

Veekshay also studies at “College du Saint-Esprit” and is in Form 2. When he was young, he used to watch fiction films like X-men etc… He felt as if he was living in another world just by watching these movies. This had inspired him so much that he wanted to start his own fiction films.

Then one day, his luck shone. When he asked his cousin to lend him his Photoshop DVD, the latter gave her ADOBE MASTER COLLECTION. This DVD contained all adobe products and that is how Veekshay discovered After Effects. At first, the program seemed far too complex and he had some difficulties using it. But then he realized that effects could be added to videos with this software and thus began making his first clip. He made it all by himself and had really enjoyed it. This had become a passion for him and he began to make more and more videos and published them on YouTube and managed to get an increasing number of subscribers for his videos.

His increasing amount of subscribers encouraged him so much that he began to create some videos for fun. Well all of his videos can be found on his YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/psp1045).

“I am very young for those videos according to some friends but there are others like Shuaib (TheRippingGhost)  who make videos with special effects too…”

There’s more than Facebook quizzes!

My point is that I want to show that Mauritians youngsters like me all have the potential to do more than participating to Facebook quizzes or stupid surveys… A few of the youngsters out there have ventured themselves into web designing, including the creation of flash web sites and animations. Good initiative!

However, they can do more exciting things and I believe this is a way which will contribute to convert Mauritius into a true Cyber Island. Because being a Cyber Island requires the population to be literate in all sectors of the IT industry.

So the World Cup finally ended with the Spain’s victory over Netherland.

We have to give credit to the excellent organization of the event which was the first one in Africa and which also had its loads of surprises making this a unique world cup!

Here are some of the main topics which someone would remember of the tournament:

• Vuvuzela: it sounded like a bee hive during the matches, irritated a lot of the viewers, is as loud as an airplane, but finally everybody adopted it as the instrument got so popular being even used in strikes in France! [Read post]
• French player strike: As Zidane said in an interview, everybody would remember the winner of the world cup and the French players strike! Never ever seen such thing before, deplorable is the word! But well it also reflect the countries constant strikes and French revolution attitude
• Referee mistakes: This World cup saw 2 terrible referee mistakes during the Germany-England and Argentina-Mexico Matches. These are mistakes which could have been avoided if the video was used. This is a continuous debate for which Fifa really should do something!
• Suarez of Uruguay hand: After a very intense action at the last minutes of prolongations, Suarez hand, or hand of gods, saved the team from a defeat from Ghana. This was a sad and unfair action which deceived all the African continent in gaining their first team to attend semi-finals. The penalty after could not be achieved, and maybe should fifa consider giving a free goal if a hand is used to save a goal

• Paul Octopus: Last but not the least, the spychic Octopus everybody was talking about: his predictions were correct for 8 consecutive matches!! That makes 1 out of 256 chances to make a correct guess. This Octopus created such a hype during the world cup that angry supporters wanted to kill and eat it, other considered it as a star, and even Spain government willing to send special forces to protect the gifted one

Ça y est, la coupe du monde à commencer avec son lot de surprise et de plaisir de jolis matchs de football. Vous avez certainement tous aussi entendu parlé de ce nouvel instrument Sud Africain : La Vuvuzela !

Vous ne voyez pas ce que c’est ?

Et ben vous avez surement remarqué ces affreux bruits de bourdonnement d’abeille pendant les matchs à la télé ? La FIFA décrit l’instrument qui peut atteindre 127 décibel (soit  presque autant qu’un avion qui décolle) comme tel :

« Imaginez le barrissement d’un éléphant et multipliez-le par des milliers de spectateurs, vous obtiendrez une petite idée de l’ambiance qui règne dans un stade sud-africain. »

Les joueurs de foot aussi se plaignent de ne plus s’entendre pendant les matchs et les spectateurs en ressortent sourd.

Pourtant, la Vuvuzela fait partie de la culture africaine : on ne peut pas imaginer un match en Afrique du Sud sans cet instrument. Et empêcher son utilisation serait comme une insulte au pays qui organise l’événement.

Hullo everyone,

This year I started the last semester of my LLB at UOM, and one of the modules I am taking is Jurisprudence. Word was that it was a very strange subject, because it concerns the philosophy of law. Impossible! Its an oxymoron, was my first thought.

BUT, the good news was that the one teaching us is Judge Bhushan Domah, who is a brilliant, brilliant man, with an amazing outlook on life and a very different way of thinking. I remember our very first class, when, halfway during our lecture, one of my classmates told him: “Sir, I have a stupid question to ask.”

Mr. Domah replied, “Go ahead. I’m sure it’s not stupid.”

My friend goes, “How does it feel to be a Judge?”

And Mr. Domah grins, “I thought you were asking a stupid question!”

In line with this very singular approach to law, he asked us last week to talk to people about law and lawyers, know what they think of this matter, see how their views differ from those who are in this field. This, according to Mr. Domah, will help us better understand the philosophy of law.

So, people, I want to know :

• What do you think of law, lawyers and the legal profession in general?
• Did any of you ever contemplate becoming a lawyer?
• Do you still? Why, or why not?
• Do you believe, as does the lady who sews my churidars, that “avocats menteurs”?
• Why, according to you, do we need laws at all?

Answers to these questions, and anything else you might want to add, would be most welcome and very enriching.
